Curriculum
Curriculum Intent
At Cockfield Church of England Primary School, our curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and carefully designed to meet the needs of all pupils, regardless of background or barrier. Rooted in the National Curriculum and shaped by our local context, our curriculum aims to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills, vocabulary and learning behaviours they need to flourish academically, socially and personally.
Our curriculum is designed to be accessible to all pupils, including those with SEND and those learning within mixed-age classes. We are committed to ensuring that pupils follow the same broad curriculum, with teaching adapted through thoughtful scaffolding, targeted support and responsive teaching rather than through curriculum reduction. This ensures high expectations are maintained for every pupil while recognising individual starting points and needs.
Learning at Cockfield is purposeful, engaging and meaningful. Wherever possible, the curriculum is linked to real-life contexts familiar to our pupils, including our rural environment, local community and wider world. We place a strong emphasis on curiosity, exploration and active learning, supported by high-quality experiences both inside and beyond the classroom, including outdoor learning, educational visits and enrichment opportunities.
Our curriculum is carefully structured and coherently sequenced to enable pupils to build knowledge and skills progressively over time. Subjects are planned to ensure clear progression, avoiding unnecessary repetition while allowing opportunities for revisiting and deepening learning. The use of a rolling curriculum model in most subjects enables teachers to maintain oversight of progression across year groups and to allocate sufficient time for pupils to secure and apply their learning.
Curriculum design at Cockfield is not static. It is an ongoing, reflective process, regularly reviewed by leaders and staff to ensure it remains relevant, inclusive and effective. During 2024–25, the curriculum was reviewed and modernised through the adoption of the PKC curriculum framework, providing greater coherence, clarity and consistency across subjects while reducing staff workload and enabling teachers to focus on high-quality implementation.
As a Church of England school, our curriculum is underpinned by our Christian values and a strong commitment to developing the whole child. Alongside academic learning, we aim to nurture pupils’ character, resilience, respect for others and understanding of the wider world, preparing them well for the next stage of education and for life beyond school.
